So, in my last ditch attempt to get on steam, I somehow unproperly uninstalled it. I used the steam uninstall, and the HL2 CD said it was still on. I deleted everything I could find with search that seemed like it was actually a part of steam, and I deleted all the stuff under steam in the registry. Still no dice. I just wanted to reinstall it so I could have half a chance of updating it.
Is there any way besides a reformat that could remove all traces of steam?

You're installing Steam from the HL2 CD? That's 5 years old, man. Grab the Steam Client from the website. It's 1.5MB.

I tried that, but I bet it would still say that steam is "already installed"
I need to remove it first... :(

How about using Sysinternals File monitor & Registry monitor to find out where it checks for Steam? ;)

If steam still has shadows on your computer after using add and remove programs, use a program like CCleaner

Try a system restore to before you uninstalled it, and use add/remove programs. They might say it's stilled installed because you still have games in your steam directory?

Before I posted the thread I used add and remove programs on every steam game, and steam too, I beleive. I deleted my steam directory and all the registry files I could find.
Cstriker: More info on Ccleaner, please.

CCleaner cleans up your computer. Recommended.

Also, try this: http://www.revouninstaller.com/
It uninstalls everything!

I'll check/accept from the web-version of steam. It's at 60% ^_^
EDIT: lol, where did that "/quote" come from? that's supposed to be /img!
EDIT2: Accepted, but steam reset! 28%... I may not be able to play HL2 or map for source until I get a high speed connection :/
