This is the worlds first released custom Portal Test Chamber.

There really isn't more to say, except Portal mapping as way more complicated than it looks. I had the most trouble figuring out how to make the Orb Catcher work.

As far as custom content goes, I made a custom GLaDOS speech for this level. It's just the official lines glued together, but still.

I also hope other people will submit their test chambers in the Vault.

For the record, it's just one test chamber, so don't think it's anything more than that.

There are some lighting issues, but it's mainly involving models.

Remember to write a review after you have played through the level.

I hope you like it.

Well, it gave me the feeling of Portal.

Simple idea for a puzzle. Good start.

Lets get some really complicated stuff. :>

I had the privilege of playing it first and although short it felt much like a Portal map. For someone who didn't have the SDK content yet...He did a good job. I look forward to more maps like this from you all. I might even give it a go :D

I can't give this a low score since there are no negatives. It's short but it is the first Portal map so 5 stars from me. :)

And I forgot to rate D:
avatar Habboi says: 14th October 2007, 19:16 PM
Oh also...Sorry for spamming up the comments...Is it possible you might release an example map of the ball catcher and stuff?
avatar espen180 says: 14th October 2007, 19:23 PM
Thanks for the comments!

@Habboi: Sure, why not? But it might be hard to understand it's functionality without a description. Each element in this map (Orb Launcher, Orb Catcher, Button) needs a handful of entities to work. But yeah, I might make an example map.
avatar Habboi says: 14th October 2007, 19:26 PM
Don't worry I can understand set-ups like that...I just can't always make them from scratch. Congrats anyway.

Hey...I sent you an email regarding the map :P

Its a nice piece of work, and kudos for getting everything working. The only problem I spotted was a slight delay before the button animation goes down.
avatar Powerfox1337 says: 14th October 2007, 20:54 PM
Oops, I forgot to repeat what I said in my email. I was wondering if you could send a VMF version of the map as im still struggling with a few things.

^^ My WIP, maybe we could do a joint effort map or something :P

Very nice! It might just be me, but the LOD of the doors seems a bit off?

5/5 anyway!
avatar Snpbond says: 15th October 2007, 00:38 AM
Hate to say it but this isn't the first custom map.

Just the same I'll try it out ;)

Quite a fun map, well thought out, and not bad for not having an official sdk released.

The button didn't always work when I stood on it, but that happened once in Portal too...anyways, with a little tweeking this would be good enough for the real game. 5/5
avatar espen180 says: 15th October 2007, 11:58 AM
@splatzone: What is LOD? :embarrassed:

@Snpbond: Wow... I thought I was the first...
avatar espen180 says: 15th October 2007, 13:02 PM
I do not recognize kanjaras map as a finished product. First of all, kenjara himself claims this is a work in progress. Second, his map is merely a rushed blocky maze with entities thrown around it and the "Portal" sticker slapped on it's face.
avatar Strider says: 15th October 2007, 13:56 PM
What does it matter if it's the first map or not (though I believe it isn't - the game's been out a week now). Is there a particular reason you've posted 'FIRST CUSTOM PORTAL BLAH' everywhere you could?

I don't think President Bush got where he is by being the first person to make a custom Quake map. ;P

At any rate, it looks a little boring and rushed from the screenie, but I'll try it out when I get Orange Box retail later this week.
avatar espen180 says: 15th October 2007, 14:29 PM
Thanks, Strider. :) I'm looking forward to your review.

Many of the little details which adorned the official maps are absent here, such as the lines of lights which link buttons and doors. I know they're not used everywhere in the official maps, but I think in a place such as this (where the link between button and door is obvious) they would have been. So I think this makes it look a bit rushed.

Personally I wouldn't place any importance in having the first custom map out for a game.

The puzzle took me about 10 seconds to work out.

Kudos on working out some of the entity setups so quickly though.

I look forward to bigger, more detailed and harder maps.
avatar Powerfox1337 says: 16th October 2007, 16:43 PM
Uhh, I just realised.

You decompiled an official map and copied the doors etc, didnt you? I just tried it and your setup is EXACTLY the same as they have it.
avatar Powerfox1337 says: 16th October 2007, 16:47 PM
(Even the info_overlay points, which are used for those lights on the floor)
avatar espen180 says: 16th October 2007, 16:55 PM
No, I didn't, actually. I decompiled an official map, yes, but I didn't steal ANYTHING. I merely looked around to see how ValvE had gone forth making some of the gameplay elements.

I made every single thing in this map from scratch, exept for the doors, which was a prefab that came with the .fgd.
avatar Powerfox1337 says: 16th October 2007, 17:35 PM
Then how come your outputs are full of errors for the button, because they are pointing to things that do not exist
avatar espen180 says: 16th October 2007, 21:24 PM
Prefab, dipshit! It came with the FGD.
avatar Powerfox1337 says: 17th October 2007, 14:30 PM
Uhh no need to swear....You said that EVERYTHING in the map is made from scratch except the doors. I didnt see buttons in there anywhere.

Your fault, not mine ;/
avatar Instant Mix says: star star star star star 20th October 2007, 14:20 PM
Does it have the VMF?
avatar Blitzkrieg says: star star star 22nd October 2007, 17:46 PM
Well, let's see.

- Extremely short. Beaten in a matter of seconds.
- Easy, but not stupidly easy. The puzzle could at least challenge newer players.

+ You get points for popping out a map for a brand new mod so quickly, but I'd like to see more. Same thing I told Snpbond. Now that we know you can do it, lets see something challenging that takes more then seconds to complete.

Not bad, now we all expect something better!
avatar Madcow says: star star 29th October 2007, 17:01 PM
The map was EXTREAMLY short.
I mean, there was just one small puzzle in it which anyone could solve.
You know better espen!

Im sorry espen, but I'll only give you a 2 for this one.
(I can't rate cuz I've already rated it.. moderator?)
